The stand alone solar system works only in day, generally from 9.00 to 3.00 hours solar time. Rest of time it generates negligible energy to suit owner requirements. So for other times some storage device essential for running lights, fans, motors, freeze, etc.
Battery is a electric storage device. It sores electricity in the form of chemical energy. Generally there are two types of batteries, first is automobile battery or thin plate battery and other is deep cycle battery or thick plate battery. For our application in solar system deep cycle battery is used.  We can use 80%  of its capacity.
Example:  A 48Volt DC has an AC loads of 6 tube lights 40watts, 5 fans60watts, freeze, water pump etc.
(A)Average daily energy (Wh)
1.   (No. of tube lightsxwattsxNo. of hoursxno.of days /week)/7days/week
In this way calculate Wh for fans, freeze, motors etc. Suppose total  it came 4600Wh, than add extra 20% . Now it became (4600+20%x4600) 5520Wh.
2.   The  other method is electric bill, if you have electric connection. See how much unit you have consumed per month. Take average of all months and calculate per day electric consumption . Wh. Suppose it came 5500Wh.
(B) If there is cloudy days, the solar energy will not be available that day. So we keep the reserve energy for three days autonomy. Now the battery bank is designed for:
 (Average daily consumption)x3
The battery capacity is denoted by AH, so divide 16560Wh by 48Volt
=16560/48 Ah
This 345Ah is usable capacity of battery, It is only 80% of battery bank capacity. So total capacity of battery is :
Temperature correction:
The battery is designed to operate at room temperature 25°C. Below this temperature the effective capacity decreases as rate of chemical reaction slow down. So the storage capacity must be corrected upward for condition of use. In winter the room temperature go down to 10°C. The effective capacity reduced to 1%/°C below 25°C. Thus the differential is (25-10=15°C).Thus the 15% capacity reduced. Our battery capacity 431.25Ah is corrected to
So we shall use 500Ah at a discharge rate C/20, placing it at room temperature 25°C.
Take 24 cells of two volts and 500Ah to connect in series to make battery bank 48Volt, 500Ah. The other combinations are eight six volt and 500Ah, Four 12Volts and 500Ah, connected in series. Donot use more than two parallel connections.
   Effect of discharge rate  
As the discharge rate increases the capacity decreases and vice versa. For example Surrette S460 has a capacity of 360Ah at C/24. Meaning the 15A load discharges in 24 hours. (100% discharge). If discharge rate C/100 than capacity increases 466Ah, as there is more time to active material for participating in chemical reaction. If the discharge rate increases to C/4, than less time is available to active material for participating chemical reaction. The battery capacity reduced

(ii)  Dish Type Cookers
Solar CookerIt is useful for joint families, small establishments etc. catering to about 15 persons at a time. The cooker can be easily assembled and dismantled and can also be packed and transported easily. The cooker is user-friendly as the place of the vessel to be kept for cooking is at a level convenient for people to use.
It is a concentrating type parabolic dish cooker with aperture of 1.4 m diameter and focal length 0.28 m. The reflecting material used is anodized aluminium sheet with a reflectivity of over 75 %. The parabolic dish is made of reflecting sheets supported on suitable rings for holding them in fixed position. The sheets are joined together in such a way as to form a parabolic shape. The structure and frame of the bowl should be strong so that the reflectors do not get deformed while turning in various directions. The reflector stand is made of mild steel with powder coating.
Manual tracking arrangement is provided and adjustments may be made once in 15 to 20 minutes at the time of cooking. The stand is designed in such a way that the reflector could rotate 360° around horizontal axis passing through the focus and centre of gravity. It will also rotate around the vertical axis so as to turn the reflector in the direction of the sun.
Working Principle
The cooking vessel is placed at central point where all the sun’s rays are concentrated through the reflecting sheets to deliver energy equivalent of 0.6 kW to boil 2 – 3 litres of water in ½ hour. The temperature achieved at the bottom of the vessel is about 350°C to 400°C sufficient for roasting, frying and boiling. The cooker has a thermal efficiency of about 40 % and can be used on clear sunny days from one hour after sun rise to one hour before sun set.

Principles of electric generation by solar cell

Introduction: Solar energy is god gift to human beings. Daily trillions KWh of energy falls on earth. The solar energy is in the form of different sizes of solar radiations. Among these are 7% ultraviolet (200nm – 380nm- Neno meter means 10^-9M), 47% visible wavelengths (380nm – 780nm) & 46% infrared (780nm – 5000nm). The average irradiation falls on the outside of earths’ atmosphere is 1367 watts/M^2. About 25% energy is absorbed or scattered by ozone, water vapors, dry air, upper & lower dust and rest of extraterrestrial direct normal irradiation  1000watts/M^2 reaches to earth surface.
The India is getting good share of it due to its position on the earth. The Barmer a western district of Rajasthan the state of India is receiving solar energy 6-6.5 KWh/M^2/day (Killo-watt hour per meter square per day). There are two processes to generate electricity . One is solar thermal and other is photovoltaic. Our discussion is towards electric generation by photovoltaic.
The solar radiation also called “PHOTON”. The meaning of PHOTO is “produced by light” and VOLTAIC is “electricity produced by chemical reaction”. Thus a photovoltaic cell means a device which produces electricity by light. The device by which electricity is produced is called solar photovoltaic cell.
Solar cell: Solar cell is made of 0.9999% pure silicon doped boron & phosphorus. Silicon has 4 electrons in its outer bond.  Boron has three electrons in his outer bond so there is vacancy for one electron , so it is positive & phosphorous has 5  electrons in outer bond so it is has extra electron , it is negative. Thus constituted silicon with boron & phosphorous is  P-N junction diode and  is called solar cell.  The movement of free electron are  always from p side to N side of P-N junction diode even in night also.
Types of Solar cells:
There are two types of solar cells generally used one is Crystalline and second is thin film.  Further Crystalline solar cell is divided as mono crystalline and poly crystalline depends upon their manufacturing processes. The mono crystalline cell has 13.5% to 15% efficiency, where poly crystalline has 0.5% less efficiency to mono crystalline. The poly crystalline is cheaper than mono crystalline solar cell. The amorphous is thin film solar cell, but it has 6 % to 7% efficiency. So space required for thin film solar cell is double the space required for crystalline solar cell for same power output. In my opinion always use poly crystalline solar cell.
Principles of electricity generation: Keep the ‘N’ side of solar cell parallel to sun so that sun rays fall perpendicular to surface of cell. The sun rays constituted of photons falls on the cell. Sum photons reflected back, sum passes through cell and some are absorbed for generation of electricity. The photons dislodge the electrons from ‘N’  surface  (CONTINUE)

You will wonder that your cars will be run by water instead of petrol or diesel. Shree Ratan TATA has announced to make a car, driven by water. Hydrogen the future fuel for automobiles is derived from water by electrolysis process with help of solar panels. One cubic meter (at NTP) of hydrogen would require 3.266 KWh of DC electric energy. Three cubic meter (at NTP) of hydrogen will provide as much power as one liter diesel to your vehicle.
Decade ago we heard that cars will be run by water. The fossil fuels like diesel, gas and petrol will be replaced by water. This surprise is possible in now a day. The hydrogen is separated from water by electrolysis process with the help of solar panels.

Barmer district is situated at the 71° 23' East Longitude and 25° 45' North Latitude in west of state Rajasthan and country India. It has so many local resources and tourist places and hotels. Total area is 28387 km2. Even 1% of this area can produce 24GWh electrical energy per year. The average sun shines for 340 days a year.(Barmer weather) The Sun gives light energy @ 1KW per square meter at   25 ° cell (solar cell) temperature and 1.5 air mas The solar insolation is 2400KWh per year. This means that if we install 1KW solar energy power plant at home, we can solar light of 2400KWh per year. This amount of energy is sufficient for average house hold. Besides this small power plant we can construct big plants in the range of 1MW to 500MW or more. These big projects can be grid connected for further supply to destinations. Though the energy cost of generated electricity is Rs.15/- per KWh, but it is pollution free energy. 1KW solar plant saves 0.8tones carbon. The solar energy is not only environmental friendly, but it also generates employments. The land owners can be made partner for that power plant.The secret of solar power plant is that it can be constructed in 1KW, 2Kw, -----1MW, 10MW ,100MW and so on.  The Indian Govt. has declared a policy for boosting solar energy in a Jawaharlal  Neharu solar energy mission-2010. In Rajasthan five districts Barmer, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Nagaur and Bikaner have been chosen for solar energy
 There are two types of solar plants.
1. Photovoltaic Stand alone system
2. Electric grid connected system.
Stand alone system is independent system which generates electrical energy from photovoltaic cells. This can be installed on home's roof to fulfill the requirement of home owner. It consist of solar panels, deep cycle batteries for power back up, inverters, charge controllers & power panel etc. The part of system other than solar panel is called B.O.S(Balance of system).The grid connected system is the same as stand alone system but it has no back-up batteries, the electricity is generated and sent to electric grid. One can use also back flow meter to sell the excess amount of energy at day time and receive back when there is no sun, in night or cloudy season. Commercially   grid connected systems are of two types. 1. Photovoltaic 2. Solar thermal. The photovoltaic is described as above, but the solar thermal power plant is different one. It uses parabolic concentrated glasses, synthetic oil passes through it and heated to 400°centigrade, this temperature produces super heated steam and power is generated from steam turbines just like fossil power plants. The ESOLAR has designed a solar power tower system which uses heliostats. A 50MW solar power tower system will come in Jaisalmer by ACME Jaisalmer solar thermal Pvt.Ltd. Beside solar energy lignite based power plants have been established in village Bhadres by the name RAJWEST and other in thumbali, cairn India is exploring crude oil & gas from earth, HPCL is establishing refinery in Barmer. Thus the Barmer become the energy hub in the world map.
1. Photovoltaic solar cell stand alone system:- 1KW
It is useful small houses for lighting purposes, water pump sets. It can be installed on the roof of house or ground. It consists of :-                                    .  
1     Solar panels made of mono crystalline or poly crystalline silicon cells 1000Watt.
2      Deep cycle battery 500AH
3     Combiner box
4     Charge controller
5     Inverter
6     Grounding
7     Utility circuits A.C and D.C
Site selection:- The solar panel should be mounted at shade free areas. Atleast the sun should remain during 3.0 hours before and 3.00hours after solar noon. The roof area should be 200 Square feet (Approx. 20.M2).The roof should bear wind load and panel weight. If you are installing solar panels on the ground, than these should be protected with fencing.

Solar panels mounting:- Solar panels are mounted on iron fixtures so that it can withstand wind and weight of panels. The direction of panel is south facing for maximum power tracking. The tilt angle of panels will be 25° from horizontal. This angle is called axis tracking angle. You can set 40° degree tracking angle in the month of December and 10° degree in the month of June. In the month of September & March it will be 25° degree. 
Determination of south:-  For correct mounting of panels you should determine the true south. Erect a 5 to 6 feet wooden stick vertically on the ground and see the shadow of this stick at the mid day time. ( watch the time of sun rise & sun set of any day and get total sun day, make it half and add to sun rise. This time is called solar noon.). The shade indicates true south and true north.  You need not to find it with magnetic compass. Because for Barmer true north and magnetic north are approximately equal.

Deep cycle batteries:- Do not use automobile batteries. These batteries are different from ordinary automobile batteries. These batteries can be discharged up to 80% as compare to automotive batteries, which can be discharged up to 20%. Batteries are connected series and parallel in such a way to produce 48 Volts. 500Ah battery is sufficient.
Junction box:- Solar panels are connected parallel or series to produce 48 nominal volts.
Charge controller:-  Maximum power tracking charge controller should be used. Solar power increases from sunrise and become maximum at noon and decreases to sun set. So charge controller regulates the power output.
Inverter:- It converts D.C to A.C. 48Volts D.C is converted into 230Volt A.C at frequency 50 cycles/second. Do not use U.S.A standard inverter because it uses 60c/s.
Grounding:- Solar panels should be grounded properly to save from lightening.
Utility- A.C & D.C circuits: We can use both utility electric circuits for our basic needs. 
Water pumps:- Batteries and inverter is not used in this system. Two axis trackers are used to maximize power out put.
Govt. rebates :- In Rajasthan, Rajasthan Renawable Energy Corporation Ltd  is Govt. agency for registration of solar thermal & solar photovoltaic power plant.
1     Rs.12/- rebate for 1KWh for photovoltaic power plant.(Commercial only)
2     Rs. 10/- rebate for 1KWh for solar thermal power plant.(Commercial only)
3     100% depreciation for all.
4     Rs.86%- Per peak watt subsidy for installing solar power at wells for irrigation purposes.  
 Cost and life of plant: The cost of 1KW power plant is Rs.92225/- LANCO
       The life of solar panel is 25years. The battery life is 5 to 8 years depends upon us.
                      In the last solar energy is pollution free energy. It helps to reduce global warming & save lot of water. It is energy for future. U.S.A, Canada and Australian govt. are giving individual subsidy $5000/- per KW. Our govt. should provide such subsidy. Govt. should impose carbon tax to huge consumers of electricity and discharges green house gases i.e using coal & lignite for generation of electricity. The cost of solar energy in the form of solar light decreases as the time passes.

System Description
Solar Photovoltaic Modules : A solar photovoltaic module is the basic element of each photovoltaic system. It consists of number of solar cells arranged and connected in a definite pattern. It converts solar energy into electrical energy when sunlight falls on its surface.
Solar Inverter Cum Charge Controller With Intelligent Logic Control : Solar Inverter converts DC (Direct current)power from the battery to AC (Alternating current) power compatible with the utility and AC loads. This unit consists of Solar Inverter cum Charge Controller with Intelligent Logic which controls the charging of battery from solar or mains with solar as priority.
This system monitors the Battery charge status and accordingly decides to charge the battery either from solar or from mains. First priority of charging is from solar modules and only in the absence of solar power (no-sunshine time) and when battery voltage is low (a predetermined level), the mains charger is turned ON automatically. This maintains the battery on float.
When battery bank reaches a preset low voltage, mains charger turns "ON" and charges the battery bank. Next day, when solar radiation is available, the cycle repeats. This ensures healthiness of battery and hence the life of the battery gets extended. Battery deep discharge, over charge protections are incorporated inside the Solar Inverter.

A device that converts the chemical energy contained in its active materials directly into electrical energy by means of an electrochemical reaction. Low maintenance, tubular type batteries are provided with this system.
